Useful help and advice

Got a problem with a socket?
To check to see if a socket is faulty, simply plug an appliance into the socket so see if it has power.
If the appliance isn't getting any power, the socket will most likely be the problem.
Before you attempt any repairs, switch off the power at the mains supply to prevent shock.
Remove all plugs from the socket outlet carefully. Pulling out a plug by the cable could damage the contact between the plug and socket outlet. This can result in the plug overheating, the wires becoming loose or even an electric shock.
Check the plug and socket outlet for burn marks, buzzing or crackling or excessive heat.
If any of these things happen we advise you to call in a approved electrician as soon as possible.

Need to change a lightbulb?
First make sure the power is turned off. The safest way to do this is to switch the electric for that area off at the fusebox.
Ensure that the replacement bulb is the correct wattage.
Allow the bulb to cool before touching it, or use a cloth to prevent you from burning yourself.
Ensure you can safely reach the bulb.
Remove the bulb from the holding socket. Depending on what type of fitting your bulb has will determine how it is removed.

  • Bayonet Mount (two prongs, standard in the UK): Grasp the bulb lightly but firmly, push upwards gently and turn anticlockwise until it is released from the socket.
  • Screw Fitting (most common in Europe): Keep gently twisting anticlockwise until the bulb comes loose from the socket.

Insert the replacement bulb into the holding socket, this is done by doing the opposite of removal.
Once the bulb is in, turn the power back on again and switch on the light.
If the replacement bulb does not work, ensure that the electrics are all on at the fusebox. Failing this there could be a problem with your electrical system, in which case you should call an approved electrician as soon as possible. The old bulb needs to be disposed of safely as the glass is fragile and very sharp. Use the packaging from the new bulb to wrap the old one for safe disposal.
